MANILA — Light-flyweight boxer Carlo Paalam pulverized his Japanese foe to submission to eke out a unanimous decision win in the Tokyo Olympics.
The win assured the country its second silver medal in the Covid-19-delayed quadrennial meet, a feat never done before since the Philippines first joined the Olympics in 1924.
But more importantly, Paalam also positioned himself for a possible second gold medal for the country after Hidilyn Diaz’s gold medal victory last Monday, 26th of July, in weightlifting.
The 23-year-old Paalam pummeled Japan’s Ryomei Tanaka to submission at the Kokugikan Arena.
Nesthy Petecio earlier won a silver in boxing even as boxer Eumir Marcial settled for bronze as he bowed to Ukraine’s Oleksandr Khyzhniak in their silver medal match in the men’s middleweight division on Thursday (05 Aug 2021). ai/mtvn
