BOC Cagayan De Oro shreds 30M Worth of Illicit Cigarettes

MANILA — The Bureau of Customs Port of Cagayan de Oro, led by District Collector Atty. Elvira Cruz, has destroyed illicit cigarettes worth 30 million pesos inside Digama Warehouse and Destruction Facility in Barangay Bayabas, Cagayan de Oro, on September 8, 2021.

The 977 master cases of cigarettes or 48,850 reams were destroyed using shredder equipment. The shipment, consigned to a certain Lorna Oftana from General Santos, City, was apprehended based on the received derogatory information from national intelligence agencies against the shipment and after being misdeclared as personal effects upon arrival at Mindanao Container Terminal in Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental last May 20, 2021.

Present during the destruction was Deputy Collector for Operations Elizabeth Delas Llagas, CIIS CDO Field Station Chief IO1 Oliver Valiente, ESS CDO District Commander SP/Capt. Abdila Maulana Jr., ESS CDO Deputy District Commander SP/Lt. Arkhan Macaombang, Warehouse In-Charge Maida Dimakuta, and Mr. Richard Paragas, representative of Philip Morris.

Consequently, a case for violation of RA 10863 otherwise known as Customs Modernization and Tariff Act (CMTA) in relation to Section 1400 (Misdeclaration) was already filed against the consignee.

BOC through the Port of Cagayan De Oro headed by District Collector Atty. Elvira Cruz, vowed to continue its commitment to protect the borders from illegal shipments including illicit cigarettes which disrupts the tobacco industry and prevent the collection of lawful revenues.
