LAPU-LAPU CITY, Cebu – “There can only be one” as popularized by the action-fantasy movie Highlander seems to be the guiding principle of the Dutertes as Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio on Thursday, September 9, said she has decided not to run for president in the 2022 polls.
This, she aired through her spokesperson Liloan Mayor Christina Francisco, the day after her father President Rodrigo Roa Duterte admitted the nomination of a faction of PDP-Laban for him to run as their vice-presidential candidate.
“I am not running for a national position as we (President Duterte and Mayor Sara) both agreed only one of us will run for a national position in 2022,” Francisco quoted the feisty Davao City mayor as saying.
It can be recalled that on August 24, Duterte said that “only one Duterte” should run for the two top elective posts of the country, explaining those options would not be good if they (Duterte and Sara) both run.
The faction of PDP-Laban led by Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi has formally nominated Senator Bong Go as president but he declined the nomination.
Some political observers noted that with the apparent “final answer” of Sara, it is not far-fetched that the Cusi faction of PDP-Laban will adopt former Senator Bongbong Marcos as their guest presidential candidate, paving for a Marcos-Duterte tandem.
On the other hand, they predicted an Isko Moreno-Manny Pacquiao tandem with the probable backing of Vice President Leni Robredo and the anti-Duterte coalition 1Sambayan. (ai/mtvn)
