MANILA — Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Gen. Guillermo Eleazar on Saturday appealed to the public, especially motorists, to behave and follow traffic rules when traversing major roads to ensure safety.

Eleazar made the appeal following a nasty incident in Zamboanga City wherein three motorcycle riders allegedly engaged in a dangerous drag race while traversing the main road on September 4.

According to the PNP chief, the riders have been identified and sanctioned but at the same time, he reminded the public that this incident should serve as a lesson to drive safely and use roads properly.

Reports reaching PGen Eleazar’s office said the licenses of riders, identified as Anton Jan Refran Loon, Harson Dale Feliciano Natividad, and Juniesher Ismun Bonifacio, have been confiscated over their alleged violation of Republic Act 4136 or the Land Transportation and Traffic Code.

The riders are also facing a three-month suspension as they are prohibited to drive any kind of vehicle. They were also issued a Temporary Operator’s Permit (TOP).

Authorities will still determine if their licenses would be revoked or not.

Meanwhile, PGen Eleazar urged the public to report to law enforcers those riders and drivers who pose risk to the public’s safety when on roads. He mentioned the police officers in Zambales who have been penalized after performing motorcycle stunts.

“I also hope that this, along with the incident in Zambales involving our two personnel who were also sanctioned, would further encourage our kababayan to report to the police activities that endanger the lives of our people on the road.

The PNP maintains an E-Sumbong platform where the public can lodge their complaints. (ai/mtvn)
