LAPU-LAPU CITY, Cebu – With a bated breath, residents here are waiting for the outcome of a citizens’ movement launch on Monday to convince Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio to run for the presidency in the 2022 elections and asking President Rodrigo Roa Duterte to back out from the vice presidential race.
On Monday, September 13, several supporters, chapter members, and officers of Hugpong Para kay Sara (HPS) took their oath and pledged to support Duterte-Carpio despite her earlier announcement that she will no longer seek the presidency after her father accepted the vice-presidential nomination of a faction of PDP-Laban led by the President and Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi,
“Kami bilang mga tao o citizens na sumusuporta kay Mayor Sara, while we respect her decision not to run, we believe she is the best person for the job kaya hindi kami tumitigil to convince Mayor Sara to reconsider her statement a few days ago (We, as citizens supporting Mayor Sara, while we respect her decision not to run, we believe she is the best person for the job so that we are not stopping our attempts to convince Mayor Sara to reconsider her statement a few days ago.),” Duterte-Carpio’s regional party, Hugpong ng Pagbabago (HNP), Secretary-General, Anthony Del Rosario said in a press conference in the launching of the movement.
Duterte-Carpio has said that she has decided not to run for president in the 2022 elections.
“I am not running for a national position as we (President Duterte and Mayor Sara) both agreed only one of us will run for a national position in 2022,” Duterte-Carpio said.
Both the incumbent Mayor Junard “Ahong” Chan and lone district Congresswoman Paz Corro-Radaza who is reportedly running for mayor again and whose family controlled the local politics here for 18 long years are reportedly rooting for Sara Duterte-Carpio.
Only the “third force” Team Abtik is inclined to support either Senator Manny Pacquiao or Manila Mayor Isko Moreno or Vice President Leni Robredo or whoever will emerge as standard-bearer of the united anti-Duterte forces.
But Inday Sara’s supporters remained undaunted.
“Kasama rin diyan, sana makumbinse rin natin ang ating Pangulo Duterte na i-reconsider niya ang kanyang planong tumakbo sa ating bansa. Gusto natin na si Mayor Sara Duterte ang tumakbo nilang Presidente (Alongside that, we hope to also convince President Duterte to reconsider his vice presidential bid. We want Mayor Sara to run.),” Del Rosario said.
Duterte-Carpio’s supporters also prefer former Senator Bongbong Marcos to be her vice presidential running mate.
“This is the best tandem that can lead the country in the next six years due to their combined experience and genuine empathy for the common folk,” said HPS vice president Abra Rep. Joseph Bernos. (ai/mtvn)
