LAPU-LAPU CITY, Cebu – Just like a suspense-thriller movie, there is still no final tandem of the opposition to face the anticipated Bongbong Marcos-Sara Duterte or BBM-Digong Duterte team-up of the outgoing administration.
Reliable sources revealed Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso had a one-on-one meeting with Senator Manny Pacquiao on Sunday, September 12, but no final decision was arrived on who will run for president and vice president.
Pacquiao heads one faction of the PDP-Laban, while Moreno now leads the Aksyon Demokratiko.
On Monday, September 13, Vice President Leni Robredo of the Liberal Party (LP) separately met Pacquiao and Moreno, as part of her efforts to field a single tandem of the “united anti-Duterte forces” against the administration standard-bearers.
Earlier reports said that Robredo said she would be willing to support an Isko-Pacquiao tandem just to defeat the Duterte-anointed candidates.
However, this was strongly denied by her followers, saying that Robredo would surely run for president.
Former Senator Antonio “Sonny” Trillanes IV also said he would be willing to forego his vice presidential ambition and gave way to either Moreno or Senator Grace Poe.
From October 1 to 8 this year, all national and local candidates will be filing their certificates of candidacy (COC).
However, substitutes of official candidates of a political party have until November 15 this year to file their COCs to reflect the substitute’s name on official ballots.
It can be recalled that then Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Roa Duterte was the “last-minute” substitute of Martin Diño who had filed his candidacy for president in 2016 under PDP-Laban.
When Duterte won, Diño was appointed Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) chairman.
After three months in the SBMA stint, on January 8, 2018, Duterte named him Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Undersecretary. (ai/mtvn)
