LAPU-LAPU CITY, Philippines — The political pot in this highly urbanized city, with estimated voters of at least 200,000, is now sizzling following reports that three Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (Lakas-CMD) councilors in Lapu-Lapu City allegedly received an offer from Mayor Junard “Ahong” Chan of PDP-Laban to switch sides.
The three councilors are reportedly identified with former mayor and now Congresswoman Paz Corro-Radaza who will run for the top local executive post again.
Councilor Rudy Potot said he heard such a rumor but declined to name the councilors who reportedly received an offer from Chan.
Fuming, Chan strongly denied the allegation.
Cebu Daily News reported that the mayor also said that he will be consulting with his lawyers for possible legal action against the councilor.
Potot, however, said Chan’s alleged offer was turned down by the councilors because they remained loyal to the Radaza political clan who has ruled this city for 18 long years.
Nine of the councilors are Radaza allies while Chan has three ally councilors.
Chan decried that his projects that can elevate the living condition of the residents in this city are always blocked by the majority of councilors.
Radaza supporters claimed that Chan was just a former henchman of the Radazas.
Chan and Radaza are also “courting” presidential daughter and Davao City Sara Duterte-Carpio who is still being pushed by many groups to run for president despite President Rodrigo Roa Duterte’s acceptance of his PDP-Laban faction’s nomination to run for vice president.
Many residents here are looking for alternative candidates like Team Abtik which has positioned against corruption and political dynasties.
Team Abtik said it is inclined to support the presidential bid of either Senator Manny Pacquiao or Manila Mayor Isko Moreno or Vice President Leni Robredo or whoever will be chosen as the standard-bearer of the “united anti-Duterte forces.” (ai/mtvn)
