LAPU-LAPU CITY, Cebu — “Iwas-pusoy” or the euphemism of playing safe was seemingly employed by Leyte Congresswoman Lucy Torres-Gomez as barely two weeks before the filing of certificates of candidacy (COC), she opted to run for mayor of Ormoc City in 2022 despite being a common bet of Senator Ping Lacson-Senate President Tito Sotto tandem and of the PDP-Laban faction of Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi.
This surfaced on September 16, Thursday, when Sotto said Torres-Gomez met with former House Speaker Pantaleon “Bebot” Alvarez who is the president of revived political party Partido Reporma, where Senator Panfilo Lacson sits as chairman.
“[Former House Speaker Pantaleon] Alvarez just met with Lucy. She has decided not to run for the Senate and instead for Mayor of Ormoc,” Sotto told reporters in an online briefing.
Torres-Gomez, the wife of former matinee idol Richard Gomez, was among those included in the initial senatorial slate of the Lacson-Sotto tandem.
She was also earlier being considered by the Cusi faction of PDP-Laban.
As early as two months ago, Sotto announced the following as senatorial bets of the Lacson-Sotto tandem: former Senator JV Ejercito, former Senator and now Sorsogon Governor Francis “Chiz” Escudero, Senator Sherwin Gatchalian, Senator Richard Gordon, former Senator and now Information and Communications Technology (DICT) Secretary Gringo Honasan, former Comelec Commissioner Gregorio “Goyo” Larrazabal, former Senator and now Antique Rep. Loren Legarda, Senator Joel Villanueva, Senator Juan Miguel “Migz” Zubiri, and Torres-Gomez.
Ejercito, Gatchalian, and Legarda are members of the Nationalist People’s Coalition (NPC) where Sotto serves as chairman. (ai/mtvn)
