LAPU-LAPU CITY, Cebu – Despite the constitutional ban on political dynasties and because of the refusal of Congress to pass an enabling law, it looks like the “new battle’ of Mactan island will be between an emerging political dynasty of incumbent Mayor Junard “Ahong” Chan and the comebacking dynasty of Paz Corro-Radaza, now the lone district representative of this highly urbanized city, who is reportedly determined to wrest back the mayoralty post.
Team Abtik has presented itself as a non-traditional, alternative local slate that stands against corrupt traditional politicians and political dynasties
Reliable sources told Maharlika TV News that the announcement of the local slates of Radaza and Chan will be unveiled starting Thursday, September 23.
Both Chan and Radaza have earlier expressed support for presidential daughter and Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio before she categorically declared to seek re-election instead of running for president, sources added.
Running under Chan’s Team Libre which is affiliated with the PDP-Laban, presumably, the Duterte-Cusi faction, are Chan for his re-election as mayor, his daughter Jasmine “Daday” Chan for vice mayor, and the mayor’s wife Cindi King-Chan for representative of the lone district.
On the other hand, the Team Deretso of the Radazas which is affiliated with the Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (Lakas-CMD) will be fielding Congresswoman Radaza for mayor, Chan’s estranged vice Mayor Celsi Sitoy for re-election as vice mayor, and former Councilor Harry Radaza, nephew of Paz’s husband former mayor Arturo “Boy” Radaza.
The Radaza political dynasty has controlled the local politics in this city for 18 long years until 2019 when Chan, who was their former protégé allied with the Sitoy political dynasty of adjacent Cordova town by fielding Dr. Celsi Sitoy as vice mayor, wrested power.
It can be recalled that on January 25, 2020, the boyfriend of Daday Chan went viral after he was shown on social media using a “wang-wang” or siren just to get to school.
Cebu SunStar reported the viral video was originally uploaded as an Instagram story by a certain “JasmineKingChan,” who is believed to be the mayor’s daughter.
Many residents here are looking for an alternative local slate and Team Abtik has presented itself as a non-traditional local slate that stands against corrupt traditional politicians and political dynasties.
