Kim Atienza turns emotional as he bids goodbye to TV Patrol colleagues

MANILA—It was a short but emotion-filled moment when Kim Atienza bade farewell to ABS-CBN.

Known as “Kuya Kim,” he was the resident weatherman of ABS-CBN prime-time newscast TV Patrol since 2005.

Kuya Kim hinted at his imminent departure from his home network of many years on September 29, Wednesday. On his Instagram, he showed a group hug shot with his close friends in TV Patrol: news anchor Noli de Castro and showbiz news anchor Gretchen Fullido. The photo was shot inside the studio of the nightly newscast program of Kapamilya network.

“No words” was Kuya Kim’s only caption.

Messages from ABS-CBN news room colleagues, celebs

Messages from newsroom colleagues, media personalities and even celebrity friends poured in and posted their thoughts on his IG’s comments section like Gretchen Fullido, Dyan Castillejo and Gretchen Ho.

Veteran broadcaster friend Korina Sanchez sent a message to encourage him.

Korina had worked at ABS CBN for 30 years but she bade her mother network goodbye to transfer her show Rated K now called Rated Korina on TV5 in October 2020. This was after the station’s public affairs programs went off the air brought by the non-renewal of the network’s franchise.

Korina told Kuya Kim: “Many good things must end. But many other good things never do.”

Umagang Kay Ganda host Donita Rose also left her message to Kuya Kim. Donita stated(published as is): “May the Lord comfort you as you begin a new journey.

You have maximised all the potentials given to you and you have blessed so many with your life.

“Stand tall. You will be missed here but many will look forward to God’s perfect plan up ahead as well.”

Former news anchor of the program Pinky Webb, who is now with TV5, also said: “Good luck, Kuya Kim!”

Some of Kapamilya star friends sent their support for Kuya Kim’s new journey. They include It’s Showtime hosts Vhong Navarro, Amy Perez and Jugs Jugueta. From 2009 until 2016, Kuya Kim was a co-host of the daily noontime show.

Vhong commented, “Love you Ninong @kuyakim_atienza! God bless you more!”

Amy added, “Continue to shine for our Lord Jesus Christ. Will always be here for you. Love you!”

Angel Locsin and Ogie Alcasid also sent their heartfelt messages.

Dominic Roque, Malaysian actress Carmen Soo, and Kapuso actress Kakai Bautista posted their respective emojis.

Netizens  react

There was no formal announcement yet from Kuya Kim but news broke out on September 28 that he was moving to GMA-7. Then on September 29, Kuya Kim was sighted at the Kapuso network and was said that he has started taping for his new program with GMA. It was then followed that apart from a program, Kuya Kim will be part of the GMA-7 primetime newscast 24 Oras starting October 4.

On his social media posts on September 28, Kuya Kim somewhat invited to watch the announcement of TV Patrol on October 12, Friday. It could be his last day on the program.

Netizens understand Kuya Kim’s transfer to another network.

Suffice to say that his new journey fits Kuya Kim’s line on TV Patrol where he always uttered, “Lagi natin tatandaan, ang buhay ay weather-weather lang.” (ECD/MTVN)
