BUTUAN CITY – Four persons were arrested by personnel of the Surigao del Norte Maritime Police Station (SDN-MARPSTA) during a seaborne patrol in the waters of Barangay Talisay, Surigao City on Friday.
In a report, Lt. Robert Sorilla, SDN-MARPSTA chief, said their unit received a report on the transport of illegally gathered lumber products from Dinagat Islands toward mainland Surigao.
“The seaborne patrol intercepted a motor banca without outrigger known as ‘bote’ in the area loaded with 73 pieces of Magkono logs,” Sorilla said.
He added that the seized lumber products had a total volume of 4.85 cubic meters with a total market value of PHP365,000.
The motor banca used in the transport of the illegal logs, including its engine and accessories valued at PHP300,000, were also confiscated by the SDN-MARPSTA.
The four suspects arrested were not identified in the report and are now under the custody of the maritime police for documentation and filing of appropriate charges for violating Section 77 of Presidential Decree 705, or the Revised Forestry Code of the Philippines. (PNA)
