LAPU-LAPU CITY, Cebu — In another surprising political twist, Senator Manny Pacquiao on Monday, October 1, was the first to file his certificate of candidacy for president with BUHAY Party-list Representative Lito Atienza as his running mate, beating the “Pi-Sot” (Senator Ping Lacson-Senate President Tito Sotto) and “Ko-Ong” (Manila Mayor Isko Moreno-Doc Willie Ong) teams.
Ironically, Atienza earlier said that he was brokering the tandem of Moreno and Pacquiao after news broke out that Vice President Leni Robredo declared that she was willing to back out and support a “Mor-Pac” (Moreno-Pacquiao) or “Pac-Mor” (Pacquiao-Moreno) tandem.
Pacquiao, who announced his retirement from boxing on Wednesday, September 29, was declared the standard-bearer of the PDP-Laban faction that he was leading with Senator Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III during a national assembly conducted on September 19.
Another irony was the seemingly “political marriage of convenience” as Pacquiao and Atienza have opposing views on the death penalty.
Atienza is against capital punishment while Pacquiao favors the death penalty.
Pacquiao, the “poor boy from GenSan” (General Santos City in Mindanao) who rose from poverty to become an eight-division world boxing champion, was the first presidential aspirant who filed his certificate of candidacy for the 2022 elections.
He surprised the public with Atienza as his running mate, who filed his candidacy with him. (ai/mtvn)
