MANILA — Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Police General Guillermo Lorenzo T Eleazar ordered all chiefs of police and unit commanders to be on high alert against the threat of groups attacking state security forces.
The directive came after a patrolman was injured as unidentified armed suspects ambushed their vehicle in Indanan, Sulu last Friday night.
“Inatasan ko na ang lahat ng chiefs of police at unit commanders, especially in areas with presence of large threat groups, na maging alerto at palakasin ang kanilang defense plan sa mga police station at sa mga pulis na nagsasagawa ng responde at pag-patrolya,” PGen Eleazar said.
According to reports, the PNP personnel was on board a patrol car on their way to Maimbung Municipal Police Station when the suspects ambushed them.
An investigation is now being conducted to identify the perpetrators.
PGen Eleazar said they are not discounting the possibility that some groups would step up the attacks on government forces not only to get the service firearms of policemen but also to project that they remain strong in certain areas.
In this way, this would be used by the threat groups as leverage for their extortion activities, especially among candidates.
“Maigting ang ating kampanya laban sa mga loose firearms at hindi natin inaalis ang posibilidad na pag-initan ang aming mga armas pati na rin ang posibilidad na pag-atake sa aming hanay upang ipakita na malakas pa rin ang kanilang puwersa upang gawing dahilan ng extortion sa mga kandidato sa panahon ng kampanya,” PGen Eleazar said.
PGen Eleazar also asked the cooperation from the public to report to authorities if they notice some suspicious individuals who could only threaten public safety. (ai/mtvn)
