COTABATO CITY – Chief Minister Ahod Ebrahim of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) on Tuesday emphasized the importance of statistics in addressing the socio-economic impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic and urged everyone to help rebuild the region’s economy.
“Governments across the world will never be able to recuperate if their best plan forward is to take random chances without supplementing their actions with evidence-based policies,” said Ebrahim in his message as the BARMM joined the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) in celebrating the 32nd National Statistics Month.
“The PSA, in many ways, is essential in making that possible. For it is through their work that we get the actual situation on the ground – factual, timely, and issue-based,” Ebrahim said.
Meanwhile, BARMM Labor Minister Romeo Sema said PSA statistics and data are reliable and helpful in planning economic programs.
“It is more evidence that our economic recovery from the crisis brought by the Covid-19 pandemic depends on reliable data and effective policies,” Sema said as his agency, the Ministry of Labor and Employment (MOLE), hosted the opening ceremonies for the month-long celebration in the region.
This year’s theme, “NSM@32: Revving up for Economic and Social Recovery Through Evidence-Based Policies,” highlights the importance of statistics as basis for policy decisions to address the socio-economic impact of Covid-19.
Sema acknowledged the PSA-BARMM’s determination in providing the Bangsamoro government and the public with relevant and accurate statistical information beneficial to the region.
“Additionally, the Bangsamoro government, through moral governance, is always supportive of every initiative and mandate to protect and acquire the vital information or data for our social needs,” he said.
Presidential Proclamation 647 signed by then-President Corazon C. Aquino on September 20, 1990, declared the month of October of every year as the National Statistics Month to promote, enhance, and instill awareness and appreciation of the importance and value of statistics to the different sectors the society.
