LAPU-LAPU CITY, Cebu — Beating the buzzer, veteran journalist Junex Doronio filed his certificate of candidacy (COC) for a representative of the lone district of this highly urbanized city on Friday afternoon, October 8.
Doronio — who also heads Team Abtik — is running under the Partido Lakas ng Masa (PLM).
“We have enough of corrupt traditional politicians, dynasties, and elitists in the government. It’s time for genuine change and progress that will truly benefit the people,” Doronio quipped.
Accompanying Doronio were his two candidates for councilor under Team Abtik-PLM. They are Engely Mulat Alibong, 32, representing Olango island, and Mhegs Kho Rabanzo, 25, representing the mainland and the youth sector.

Asked why he is running under PLM, he replied: “As a former union president, the PLM is ideologically compatible with me. Our presidential candidate is Ka Leody de Guzman, a Customs Administration graduate who chose to become a labor leader and now heads the Bukluran ng Manggagawang Pilipino (BMP).”
Doronio served as union president of the then sequestered Journal Group of Publications in Manila, from 1989 to 1994.
He was also elected as a director of the National Press Club of the Philippines (NPC) and later secretary of the country’s oldest and largest association of legitimate and respected journalists.
Born in Cebu City, Doronio was only 18 years old when he went to Manila where he earned his degree in Political Science at the Manuel L. Quezon University (MLQU) as a working student.
A single father of four children, Doronio moved back to Cebu in December 2005 and decided to settle down in Lapu-Lapu City where the roots of his late paternal grandmother came from. (ai/mtvn)
