LAOAG CITY – A security guard of the Philippine Ports Authority at the Port of Claveria in Cagayan drowned on Monday as Tropical Storm Maring brought strong winds and heavy rains to northern Luzon.
Pedro Sanguilan, 27, was with a roving inspection team along the coastline at about 7 a.m. when he was swept by huge waves, according to the spot report of Col. Ricardo Villanueva, the chief of the Regional Maritime Unit.
Rescue teams from the Western Cagayan Maritime Police Station, Claveria police sub-station, and Philippine Coast Guard recovered Sanguilan at around 8:20 am.
The victim, single and a resident of Barangay Centro 3, was pronounced dead 15 minutes later at the Claveria municipal health office.
As of the 2 p.m. bulletin of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration, Signal No. 2 is still up in Cagayan, Batanes, Babuyan Islands, the northern portion of Isabela, Apayao, Kalinga, Mountain Province, Abra, Ilocos Norte, and Ilocos Sur.
Some parts of Cagayan and neighboring provinces Ilocos Norte and Ilocos Sur also experienced power interruption on Monday due to uprooted trees and fallen branches. (PNA)
