LAPU-LAPU CITY, Cebu – With international think tank Fitch Solutions prediction that there will be a continuity of the Duterte administration’s infrastructure program and drug war after the 2022 polls, re-electionist Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio may eventually reconsider her decision and run for president under a small political party loyal to the administration.
Citing the precedent that then Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Roa Duterte made in 2016 when he substituted Barangay Captain Martin Diño, the presidential bet of the political party PDP-Laban, Fitch Solutions on Tuesday, October 12, said it was not discounting the possibility that the feisty presidential daughter will also make a late entry into the 2022 presidential race.
“Nevertheless, we at Fitch Solutions believe a shift to a liberal democratic presidency remains of low probability and highlight the potential for key Duterte policies, such as his focus on infrastructure development and the ‘drug war’, to be continued to varying degrees,” the think tank said.
Earlier, former National Irrigation Administration (NIA) chief Peter Tiu Lavina who is close to the Duterte family expressed serious doubts that Duterte-Carpio will join the presidential fray at the last minute but still considered a slim possibility.
“I already posted Monday about PDDS which fielded Grepor ‘Butch’ Belgica. This is the more plausible and realistic possibility if both the celebrated convict turned Christian reformer and Mayor Sara agrees,” Lavina said on his Facebook post.
PDDS is the acronym of Pederalismo ng Dugong Dakilang Samahan, a national political party in the Philippines accredited by the Commission on Elections (Comelec) on October 30, 2018.
It was founded by Presidential Anti-Corruption (PACC) Chairman Greco Belgica, son of the elder Belgica who was once tagged as “public enemy number one” at the age of 16, imprisoned, and later became a born-again Christian preacher.
The elder Belgica – popularly called Bishop Butch – was appointed as Presidential Adviser for Religious Affairs in May 2019.
On October 8, Friday, Butch Belgica filed his Certificate of Candidacy (COC) for president under PDDS.
Some political analysts said Duterte-Carpio may substitute Belgica as the presidential candidate of the PDDS.
“Bryan Escandor of PDDS Bicol told me that Mayor Sara is one of their Advisers and considered as a founding member. Will these suffice to make her as a member of the party in good standing to qualify her as a substitute for Butch Belgica? And even if this will pass the scrutiny of the COMELEC, the ultimate decision still rests on Mayor Sara. Is she going to go for it and run, or not?” Lavina further said in his Facebook post. (ai/mtvn)
