MANILA — An eye-catching cloud formation known as fire rainbows went viral on social media yesterday as netizens shared the picture of what is known as “cloud iridescence or irisation in M’lang, Cotabato.
Cloud iridescence or irisation is a colorful optical phenomenon that occurs in a cloud and appears in the general proximity of the sun or moon.

Iridescent clouds, known as “fire rainbows” or “rainbow clouds,” occur when sunlight spreads off water droplets in the atmosphere which forms a cap cloud. This “cap”— which scientists call a “pileus”— is the source of the brilliant spectacle.

The other fire rainbow was witnessed in Mansalay, Oriental Mindoro. (ai/mtvn)
