LAPU-LAPU CITY, Cebu – Take note of their body language and it looks like former Senator and presidential aspirant Bongbong Marcos has fortified his lead among presidential contenders as re-electionist Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio on Sunday announced the support of Hugpong ng Pagbabago, the political party founded by the presidential daughter, for BBM.

Some political analysts claim that with Duterte-Carpio’s declaration of backing Marcos, she could still be persuaded to run for vice president via substitution which will lapse on November 15.

“Kaya’t siguro ang pinaka-magandang mangyari is that, what will really happen is that November 15 eh ma-finalize na namin, kasi after November 15 maliwanag na kung sino ang kandidato, sino ang tutuloy, sino ang hindi (On November 15, we can finalize it because, after that, it would be clear who would continue and who would withdraw.),” Marcos told reporters in Cebu.

Despite Duterte-Carpio’s filing her certificate of candidacy (CoC) for a third term as Davao City mayor, several political analysts said there is the possibility that she will eventually run for president or vice president as there was a precedent when her father, then Davao City mayor Rodrigo Duterte substituted for Barangay captain Martin Diño as PDP-Laban standard-bearer in 2016.

Meanwhile, born-again Christian preacher Grepor “Butch” Belgica, the presidential candidate of the political party Pederalismo ng Dugong Dakilang Samahan (PDDS), on Friday expressed willingness to “give way” in case the presidential daughter decides to seek the highest government post.

“Ang totoo po niyan ay nag-appeal po kami sa kaniya (The truth is we made an appeal to her) formally and officially to consider (running for president). And we are willing to give way to her,” said Belgica who is also the Presidential Adviser on Religious Affairs and father of Greco Belgica, current chair of the Presidential Anti-Corruption Commission (PACC) and Jeremiah Belgica who is the director-general of the Anti-Red Tape Authority (ARTA).

However, Belgica told Maharlika TV that there is also a possibility that the tandem of Bongbong Marcos and Bong Go will emerge after November 15 deadline for substitution lapses. (ai/mtvn)
