LAPU-LAPU CITY, Cebu — “Education or Money Making?”
This was the question by close presidential ally and senatorial aspirant Manny Piñol on late Wednesday night as he asked President Rodrigo Roa Duterte to stop the mandatory education course amounting to P5,000 being imposed by the Land Transportation Office (LTO) to all drivers who will be renewing their license.
Piñol — who once served as Agriculture Secretary and later as Mindanao Development Authority chief — expressed outrage over the LTO regulation which requires drivers to submit a Comprehensive Driver’s Education Certificate that took effect on Thursday, Oct. 28.
“Sa gitna ng pandemya at paghihirap ng ating mga kababayan, may bagong requirement ang Land Transportation Office (LTO) na lahat ng drivers na magre-renew ng license should undergo a driver’s education course,” Piñol posted in his Facebook page.
He said the course will be conducted by private driving schools who would charge each driver P5,000.
“Driving Schools are now sprouting like mushrooms just like the emission testing centers before,” Piñol noted.
He then asked who will give accreditation to the driving schools and can it be ascertained that all drivers will really undergo such education courses.
“Ilang milyong drivers meron tayo sa Pilipinas? Bakit hindi na lang yong mga drivers na may mga traffic violations o citations or those involved in accidents ang i-educate?” Piñol fumed.
The former journalist-turned-politician further asked how can a poor tricycle driver cough up P5,000 from his daily earnings of P200.
“This is another added burden on the already suffering working people of this country, especially in the face of the COVID 19 Pandemic,” Piñol pointed out. (ai/mtvn)
