MANILA—Twenty five year-old Filipina beauty and tourism operations officer Cinderella Faye “Cindy” Obeñita won the Miss Intercontinental 2021 (The Most Beautiful Woman of All Continents).
The grand coronation of the 49th edition of the international beauty pageant was held at the Sunrise Diamond Beach Resort, Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, on October 29, Friday (October 30, Saturday, Philippines time).
Cindy is the second Filipina to bring home the Miss Intercontinental crown, the first won by Karen Gallman (Miss Intercontinental 2018) in a coronation night held on January 26, 2019 at the Mall of Asia Arena, Pasay City.
Cindy’s runners-up in the Miss Intercontinental 2021 were Paulina Uceda of Mexico (1st), Romy Simpkins of the United Kingdom (2nd), Kelly-Mary Anette of Seychelles (3rd), Kaitlyn Li of Canada (4th) and Maria Paula Castillo Lopez ng Colombia (5th).
Cindy displayed her special talents in oratory, hosting, and public speaking, which gave her an advantage during the question-and-answer segment of Miss Intercontinental 2021. She was admired for her answer to the question, “As an international ambassador, do you believe that speaking English is important for Miss Intercontinental? Why or why not?”
Cindy answered: “As an ambassador, I don’t think that speaking a specific language is very important here in Miss Intercontinental or any pageant at all, as long as that woman is a woman of power and grace, commitment, and intelligence, no matter what language she speaks.
“And that woman is actually a woman of style and substance, she can win any pageant or any endeavour that she gets into.
“I have learned here actually, in Miss Intercontinental, that a woman should possess power of substance and I believe I am that woman because that is the essence of a modern day Miss Intercontinental.”
“Sounds familiar” was the question to Cindy in the 49th Miss Intercontinental because it was similar to question asked by the judge Nigel Barker to Janine Tugonon, the Pinay beauty queen who represented the country in the 61st Miss Universe pageant on 61st Miss Universe December 19, 2012.
Barker asked: “As an international ambassador, do you believe that speaking English should be a prerequisite to being Miss Universe? Why or why not?”
Janine answered: “For me, being Miss Universe is not just about knowing how to speak a specific language. It’s being able to influence and inspire other people.
“So whatever language you have, as long as your heart wants to serve and you have a strong mind to show people, then you can be Miss Universe.”
Janine was first runner-up si Janine in the Miss Universe 2012.
In Darna costume
Cindy was the only Filipina beauty queen who thought of introducing the fictional Filipino comics super heroine Darna to the beauty pageant.
She used Darna’s costume during the Halloween party of the Miss Intercontinental candidates.
“Ding, ang bato! This is me chaneling my inner Darna for the Miss Intercontinental Halloween Party.
“As most Filipinos very well know, Darna is one of our fictional heroines who has inspired many generations of dreamers like me.
“In today’s times, I encourage girls, young and old, to be like Darna in their own ways. Stand up for something worth fighting for and zoom into the skies with limitless boldness of spirit! Mabuhay ang Filipina ng makabagong henerasyon!” wrote Cindy in the caption of her Darna photo which she posted on her Instagram account.
