LAPU-LAPU CITY, Cebu — Saying it is now high time to honor the country’s first hero and speed up economic growth in the historic island of Mactan, Team Abtik congressional aspirant Junex Doronio has promised that if elected as representative of this city’s lone district he will push for the establishment of Lapu-Lapu Province which will comprise of this city and three municipalities, including Cordova, and create two legislative districts.
Doronio said that his bill on the establishment of Lapu-Lapu Province is not only a fitting tribute to the country’s first hero who quelled foreign invasion but will also transform the island into an economic hub and provide employment to thousands of Oponganons (Lapu-Lapu City residents).
“We should give credit where credit is due. Our envisioned Province of Lapu-Lapu will be an improvement of the proposed Mactan Province of former Congresswoman Aileen Radaza,” Doronio said.
It can be recalled that way back in 2013, Radaza then planned to craft a bill creating a new Province of Mactan comprising of Lapu-Lapu city and the municipalities of Olango and Opon.
The barangays of Pusok, Ibo, Buaya, Mactan, Punta Engano, Pajo, Poblacion, Looc, Gun-ob, Basak, Calawisan, Canjulao and Babag will comprise Lapu-Lapu City.
On the other hand, the clustered barangays of Suba-basbas, Marigondon, Maribago, Bangkal, Pajac and Agus will fall under the Municipality of Opon.
The Municipality of Olango will made up of Olango island which has 11 barangays Talima, Sta.Rosa, San Vicente, Tungasan, Tingo, Caw-oy, Sabang, Baring, Pangan-an, Caubian and Caohagan.
Doronio acknowledged the “brilliance” of Radaza’s proposal but said his envisioned Lapu-Lapu Province will integrate Cordova which will remain a municipality and its 13 barangays.
Doronio added that the Province of Lapu-Lapu will also be having two legislative districts, instead of only one.
Under the Local Government Code, a new province must have a population of at least 250,000, an annual income of P20 million, and a land area of 2,000 square kilometers.
According to the 2020 census, Lapu-Lapu City has a population of 497,604 people while Cordova has 70,595 people. (ai/mtvn)
