Anti-cybercrime group tasked to hunt brains behind fake news re Sermonia as ‘new PNP chief’

MANILA — The Philippine National Police Anti-Cybercrime Group has been tasked to investigate the circulation of a fake news post on social media that purportedly named Police Major General Rhodel Sermonia as the incoming chief PNP even as President Rodrigo R Duterte is yet to make an official announcement of his appointee to the top PNP post.

This developed as Sermonia, PNP Director for Operations bewailed the circulation of a social media card on Facebook announcing the Retirement Honors and Change of Command Ceremony of “Outgoing, Chief PNP” Police General Guillermo Lorenzo T Eleazar and “Incoming, Chief PNP” Police Major General Rhodel Sermonia.

The same socmed card also welcomed President Rodrigo R Duterte to the ceremony on November 12, 2021.

“This is to inform the public that this post never came from us. It is malicious and we take offense from whoever orchestrated this. We believe this is the work of saboteurs who wish to put malice on the President’s upcoming appointment of the new Chief PNP,” Sermonia wrote in his Facebook post.

“To those who want to put in harm’s way the candidates for the topmost position, I warn you that you will be held accountable for your crime.” Sermonia said.
