MANILA—A Filipino visual artist Michael Garcia Villagrante has just been bestowed the Lorenzo il Magnifico Award, the highest award in the recently concluded XIIIth Florence Biennale 2021, an international contemporary art exhibition and the first chance ever won by the Philippines.
Michael went to Italy bringing his art masterpiece titled “Pagtahan.”
The painting which depicts what the world is going through in this time of pandemic and the hope of its end, took three months for Michael to finish.
The said competition is an international exhibition of contemporary art and design which is being held in Florence every two years.
There were approximately more than 1,000 artwork entries that joined the competition entered by 500 exhibitors from more than 70 countries.
This 2021, the art competition was held at Fortezza da Bassco in Florence on October 23-31.
The Florence Biennale is considered as the major international contemporary art and design exhibition in Florence.
Apart from painting, there were different artistic categories, like sculpture, mixed media, ceramic art, textile art, fabric art, jewelry art, and many more.
Whoever wins in each category is awarded the Lorenzo il Magnifico Award.
