NegOcc guv backs mandatory Covid-19 vaccination for gov’t workers

BACOLOD CITY – Negros Occidental Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson said on Wednesday he supports the idea of mandatory vaccination against coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19), particularly among the government employees.

“Especially for government workers yes, I’m really in favor (of it),” Lacson said in an interview with Capitol reporters.

He added the “legal issue” should just be addressed, adding that if it is legal, he believes there should be a national law to make Covid-19 vaccination mandated for everyone.

“As long as it is legal, I prefer that we make it mandatory,” the governor said.

Lacson noted the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) has been pushing for the passage of a local ordinance or issuance of an executive order to make the inoculation against Covid-19 mandatory.

In Negros Occidental, the provincial government has been vaccinating its employees and also workers of national government agencies with offices based in the province since May.

In his weekly Talk to the People aired on Tuesday night, President Rodrigo Duterte said he has instructed the DILG and the National Task Force against Covid-19 to further fast-track the vaccination program and “do necessary actions to achieve the population protection before the end of the year.”

The President also urged more Filipinos to get the chance to be protected from the disease. (PNA)
