DTI-12 warns public vs. defective, substandard Christmas lights

GENERAL SANTOS CITY – The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in Region 12 is advising the public to be more cautious in buying Christmas lights and other related electrical decorations.

Jude Constantine Jaugan, director of DTI-Region 12, said in an advisory on Wednesday that buyers should be more careful and thorough in purchasing such products, and only choose those that have passed the government’s quality standards.

He specifically cited electrical items that have the Philippine Standard or PS marks and Import Commodity Clearance or ICC stickers for those manufactured overseas, as safe and quality products.

Jaugan said there could be Christmas lights and other products being sold in local establishments that have not passed the standard quality checks.

“Some of these could be defective and substandard, and might compromise our safety,” the official said.

Aside from the PS or ICC marks, he said the outside diameter size of Christmas light wires should be at least 1.5 millimeters and the plug pins should be sturdy and not easily bent using the fingers.

In the previous Christmas seasons, the Bureau of Fire Protection recorded fire incidents that were traced to defective Christmas lights and related items.

To ensure safety in households, Jaugan said the public should only buy and utilize products that have quality standard markings.

He said their field units have been regularly conducting inspections in various business establishments to ensure that the products being sold have passed the government’s quality standards in line with Republic Act (RA) 7394 or the Consumer Act of the Philippines and the guidelines set by the Bureau of Philippine Standards (BPS).

Jaugan said manufacturers, importers, and retailers selling products that have not passed the BPS product certification scheme could be charged with violation of DTI Department Administrative Order 2:2007, RA 7394, and RA 4109 or the Standards Law. (PNA)
