MANILA—Now that John Lloyd Cruz is back in television on GMA7, he brings with him lessons he learned during his four-year hiatus from the industry.
John Lloyd was a certified A-list star of ABS-CBN when he suddenly left his character in a sitcom in October 2017. He took an “indefinite leave” from Star Magic, the talent management arm of ABS-CBN, and as years passed, his contract expired as a Kapamilya talent.
Even if he distanced himself from the limelight, he silently did an independent film, until he gradually made his presence felt in a script reading with Bea Alonzo on February 14, 2020 and in an experimental unconfined cinema, again with Bea in April 2020.
He formally confirmed his showbiz comeback when he was launched as premium artist of Crown Artist Management, owned by Maja Salvador.
And on November 9, John Lloyd signed a partnership agreement for his sitcom with GMA7.
During an interview with Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho recently, a fresh John Lloyd appeared as he was talking to the show’s host Jessica Soho in a place by the beach in El Nido, Palawan.
They were talking about his being a matinee idol. John Lloyd’s trademark is his eyes with a look that could melt eveyone’s heart which was evident in his romantic-comedy or romantic-drama movies which he starred in.
John Lloyd smilingly said, “Ewan ko kung ano nakikita nila. Madalas nabibisto nga ako sa mata ko, e. Dun ako nayayari, e.
“Pero madalas ibang kahulugan ang nabibigay. Ang totoo lang naman, inaantok lang naman ako.”
Jessica quipped the actor is “boyfriend ng bayan” because of his popular romantic-comedy movies.
The actor simply said, “Iba talaga ang power ng pelikula. Magaling lang siguro ‘yung mga direktor na bumuo ng mga characters ko,” as he expressed, “It is flattering, yes?
“Pero may great danger na kalakip, e. Hahaha! Parang bawal ka magkamali, especially sa mata ng audience mo. I think yun ang kapalit nun.”
Leaving showbiz in 2017
John Lloyd admitted that he came to a point wherein he needed to do some soul-searching and to strengthen his core that he suddenly took an indefinite leave from showbiz in 2017.
The 38-year old actor explained: “Parang it was the right time to be kind to myself, to start some healing. Parang it was the right time, the journey of unlearning.
“Prior to that, mga dalawang dekada akong kayod nang kayod.
“Siyempre, the thing with acquiring yung mga natutunan natin, may mga kaakibat siyang mga bagay na kakapit sa ‘yo na mahihirapan kang ipagpag para huminga muna.”
John Lloyd was asked if he felt or came to a point that he has reached his ceiling of popularity but he was looking for something “more.”
Peace and quiet life in El Nido
John Lloyd said he was drifted to El Nido, Palawan where he experienced going out and mingle with people as an ordinary person, that is why he treats the place as his “second home.”
There were times when John Lloyd was sighted in Palawan. The actor said: “Nung bagong salta ako dito, nakikibahay lang ako sa kinuhanan ko ng property.
‘Yun lang paglalakad to get from point A to point B na sanay na sanay ka na kinokotse mo.
“They will not bother you here. Bilang dayo, ikaw yung nagmamasid. Ikaw yung natulala sa paligid mo.
“Para sa mga panahon na iyon para sa isang katulad ko na nagnanais lang na manahimik, di ka mawawalan ng dahilan para mag-extend nang mag-extend nang mag-extend.”
It was also the time of hiatus when he was linked to Ellen Adarna and had a relationship until their son Elias was born in July 2018.
John Lloyd explained that as much as possible, he doesn’t want to touch the issue or talk about his ex-girlfriend. “Nagsisimula at matatapos sa anak namin ‘yung aking masasabi patungkol sa kanya or sa buhay niya,” he stated.
John Lloyd also stated that he remains cool now that he is coming back to television.
“Itong pagkakataong ito, mas hindi ako mangangahog o maghahabol sa content na gusto ko. Hayaan ko sila na dumating nang kusa.
“Yung mga naging pelikula na nagawa ko kay Lav Diaz, ‘yung mga naidulot na experiences nun, di ko rin matatawaran, e.”
John Lloyd’s last film History Ni Ha directed by Lav Diaz premiered at the BFI London Festival in October 2021.
What could be John Lloyd’s message to his younger self?
The actor said, “Siguro I’ll tell him to be more patient. I’ll tell him na huwag i-impose ‘yung truth niya sa lahat.”
The only sitcom on GMA7 that he announced was Happy to Get Her in this TV comeback.
Of course, his fans will eagerly wait and see if it would be possible for their idol to come back in doing teleseries.
