MANILA — With the discovery of a possibly more infectious and lethal variant of the severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) from southern Africa, senatorial bet Guillermo Eleazar has advised there should be no room for complacency in the government’s coronavirus pandemic response as it could potentially enter the country if the public and health authorities let down their guard just because cases of infection have dramatically decreased in the past weeks.
The new variant of Covid was discovered recently in South Africa and the World Health Organizational (WHO) has classified it as a ‘variant of concern’ after it was found to have already reached Botswana, Israel, Belgium, and Hong Kong.
In this regard, former Philippine National Police (PNP) chief, who is running for senator under Partido Reporma, has empasized the need for early interventions to prevent the possible entry of the new variant, also known scientifically as B1.1.529.
Omicron is seen to be more transmissible and resistant than the highly contagious Delta variant.
