Jonel Nuezca dies at Bilibid; investigation to determine cause of death on

MANILA — Investigation to determine the death of former police staff sergeant Jonel Nuezca inside the New Bilibid Prison is on.

Nuezca was convicted for killing Sonya Gregorio and her son Frank Anthony in Tarlac days before Christmas last year.

His death was confirmed on Wednesday by BuCor Spokesperson Gabriel Chaclag who claimed Nuezca was brought to the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) hospital last Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. by his cellmates after he collapsed while walking outside his dormitory.

Chaclag said Nuezca was declared dead at 6:44 p.m.. The cause of death is still unknown but he added that “investigation is ongoing to determine if there is foul play in the incident.”

“Per Assistant Secretary Gabriel Chaclag, they are already looking into it. I asked to be given a copy of the report of their investigation,” Justice Undersecretary Deo Marco told reporters adding that the National Bureau of Investigation will conduct the autopsy.

Nuezca’s body was taken to the Eastern Funeral in Alabang, Muntinlupa.

It may be recalled that Nuezca’s case concerns the altercation that took place on Dec. 21, 2020, in the neighborhood of Nuezca in Paniqui, Tarlac where he shot in the head Sonia Gregorio, 53, and her son Frank Anthony, 25.

The incident was caught on video and went viral online.

Paniqui RTC Judge Stela Marie Gandia-Asuncion issued an Aug. 26 decision which found Nuesca guilty of two counts of murder. (ai/mtvn)
