BBM-SARA UNITEAM UNDERSCORES DATA PRIVACY SECURITY

MANILA — Presidential aspirant Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, Jr. and Vice Presidential bet Mayor Inday Sara Duterte wants the National Privacy Commission (NPC) to have more power to protect the public from future data breaches.

According to the formidable presidential and vice-presidential tandem, many people have recently fallen victim to fake text messages by unscrupulous individuals who have been actively using the Internet to scam unsuspecting victims.

They emphasized that this is not the first time that the private data of Filipinos were compromised. Millions have fallen to illegal schemes because of data breaches and hacking even before the pandemic.

The BBM-Sara UniTeam said the added power of the NPC will allow them to detect and penalize institutions or groups who failed to put safeguards on their system.

Furthermore, the personal data of every Filipino is being used not only in communication but also in digital banking, registration in different government portals, and online transactions, they said.

Other government agencies should also learn and enhance their knowledge of the new technology to avoid data breaches, the BBM-Sara UniTeam added.

A substitute bill that will amend the Data Privacy Act of 2012 has already been approved by the Lower House to enhance NPC’s capability to cope with the country’s digital transformation.

Under the amended law, the NPC will have the power to impose administrative sanctions, including a monetary penalty, summon, or subpoena any person to compel them to attend any investigation and proceedings before the commission to expedite any case brought to them.
