MANILA — With the government’s coronavirus pandemic response efforts continuing to register positive developments, economic experts have advised that confidence-building should now be the focus so that we can steadily maintain our direction towards normalcy and recovery.

In this, former Philippine National Police chief and senatorial aspirant Guillermo Lorenzo Tolentino Eleazar has expressed support, saying that strengthening the confidence of the people is the next logical step in order for us to achieve normalcy and recover from the economic downturn that has impacted our lives since the (coronavirus) pandemic struck the country more than a year ago.

According to socioeconomic planning secretary and National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) director-general Karl Kendrick Chua, the government needs to facilitate a shift to an ‘endemic’ mindset and this can be done through a change in the primary metrics used for decision-making and is being reported to the public.

“Instead of total cases and deaths, the focus should be on the total severe or critical cases, the case fatality ratio, and total vaccinated,” Chua, who also heads the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA), reiterated while proposing a 10-point policy agenda that, he said, would accelerate the country’s recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic and prepare the country for future pandemics.

In agreement, Eleazar also underscored the importance of shifting from a pandemic to an endemic paradigm that would empower Filipinos to learn how to live with the virus even as it will enable the implementation of a policy that would leverage our economic gains and allow our country to recover to the pre-pandemic level in early 2022.

Meanwhile, Chua is pushing for a policy agenda that would cover areas in metrics, vaccination, healthcare capacity, economy and mobility, schooling, domestic and international travel, digital transformation, pandemic flexibility and medium-term preparation for pandemic resilience.
