Eleazar agrees to retain 70% passenger capacity in PUVs

Despite the improving pandemic situation, the LTFRB has decided to retain the 70 percent passenger capacity in PUVs in the NCR Plus area.

MANILA — Despite the the improving situation of Covid cases in Metro Manila, senatorial aspirant Guillermo Eleazar has expressed agreement to the decision of the Land Transportation and Franchising Board of retaining the 70 percent passenger capacity of public utility vehicles (PUV) in the National Capital Region.

In a statement issued at his headquarters in Makati City on his return from a visit in his hometown of Tagcawayan in Quezon province, the former Philippine National Police (PNP) chief said he favored the 70 percent retention of passenger capacity of PUVs this Christmas season because despite the consistently low rates of COVID-19 infections, the health crisis is not yet over especially with the ominous threat of the more transmissible Omicron mutation of the coronavirus.

On Wednesday, December 8, the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) released a memorandum circular on the updated guidelines on passenger capacity of PUVs which was implemented starting the following day until January 4 next year.

According to the Department of Health (DoH), the NCR Plus area, which includes Metro Manila and the adjacent provinces of Cavite, Laguna, Batangas and Bulacan, is already at low-risk case classification for Covid-19 and the rest of the regions show decreasing average daily attack rates compared to previous weeks.

PUVs like jeepneys, railways, buses, and UV Express were allowed by the LTFRB to carry more passengers in the NCR since November due to declining cases of Covid infections and for regions that surpassed the 30 percent vaccination rate as of December 1, passenger capacity was increased from 50 percent to 70 percent.
