BBM-Sara UniTeam: Ensure the safety of returning OFWs this Christmas

MANILA — Presidential aspirant Ferdinand ‘Bongbong’ Marcos Jr. and his running mate, vice-presidential aspirant Sara Duterte, urged the government to ensure the safety of up to 100,000 Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW) against Covid-19 who are returning home this Christmas.

The BBM-Sara UniTeam was reacting to the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) statement that they are expecting the influx of 80,000 to 100,000 OFWs to celebrate the holiday season this December.

“It’s a Filipino tradition na tuwing Pasko at Bagong Taon nagsasama-sama ang pamilyang Pinoy, lalo na ang mga OFW na tuwing kapaskuhan ang schedule ng uwi sa bansa para makapiling ang pamilya. We need to make sure that they are safe from Covid-19 sa pag-uwi nila sa Bansa, ” the BBM-Sara UniTeam said, in a statement.

The tandem of Bongbong and Sara also said that they support the government’s decision to continue providing free use of quarantine facilities for returning OFWs to reduce their expenses.

The BBM-Sara UniTeam also urged the government to intensify its strict implementation of health protocols, especially now that there is a threat of Omicron, the new variant of Covid-19.

“Kailangan nating masiguro na ligtas ang mga OFW sa Covid-19 para tiyak ding ligtas ang mga uuwian nilang pamilya. Let’s have them celebrate safely with their families,”

“We need to make sure that OFWs are free from Covid-19 so that their families will be safe. Let’s have them celebrate safely with their families,” the BBM-Sara UniTeam added.

OWWA will shoulder the seven-day quarantine of returning OFWs. They will be subjected to a swab test on the fifth day, and if a negative result is released, they will be allowed to go home. The quarantine rules also depend on the Local Government Unit or province of the returning OFW.

Currently, there are 178 government-run quarantine facilities for use by OFWs returning to the country.

The BBM-Sara Uniteam added that more OFWs might come home since the number of Covid-19 cases continues to decline.

“Asahan natin na mas maraming uuwi ngayon lalo na yung mga hindi nakauwi noong nagdaang Pasko dahil sa mas mahigpit na health protocol. Kaya ito talaga ang dapat nating paghandaan,” the BBM-Sara UniTeam noted. (ai/mtvn)
