MANILA — Expressing agreement with the announcement of Cabinet secretary Karlo Alexei Nograles to retain country’s status under Alert Level 2 until the end of the year, senatorial aspirant, retired Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Guillermo Lorenzo Tolentino Eleazar, is advising caution over complacency in the prevailing pandemic situation to ensure that what we have gained from the sacrifices made in the past two years since the health crisis began would not go to waste.

Just a day ago, the Inter-Agency Task Force on the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF-MEID) approved the recommendation to keep all areas in the Philippines under Alert Level 2 from December 16 until December 31 in view of the threat of the Omicron variant and despite the declining number of Covid-19 cases.

“We are being very cautious because we observe the threat of the Omicron in other places, other countries, territories, and jurisdictions where the variant is detected, cases continue to increase. We also do not know a lot yet regarding the Omicron, plus we have not yet totally finalized the parameters for Alert Level 1,” Nograles had pointed out.

Aside from retaining the Alert Level 2 status, the Palace official said the IATF-MEID has likewise amended its metrics for determining the alert levels to be imposed in the country, explaining that the heightening of alert level will be based on Covid-19 case classification and bed utilization. Meanwhile, the community quarantine system, which was implemented prior to the alert level system, has already been abolished.

With the IATF-MEID adopting the guidelines on the nationwide implementation of the alert level system, Eleazar appealed to the public as well as local government executives (LGEs) to cooperate with government policies regarding its pandemic response and to strictly implement the minimum health safety protocols that gave been set by health authorities in order to ensure that we will not again experience a surge of infections and transmissions of Covid-19.

The retired general and Partido Reporma senatorial bet cited how the alert level system, piloted in Metro Manila last September, has encouragingly balanced the economy with efforts to safeguard the public’s health.

“Kailangan nating maging maingat pa rin kahit na gumanda na ang ating kalagayan at bumaba na rin ang mga kaso ng Covid-19. Sa ganitong paraan, hindi masasayang ang ating mga sinakripisyo at pinagharapan sa nakaraang dalawang taon at mapapabalik natin ang normalidad sa ating buhay at mapapasigla nating muli ang ating ekonomiya para unti-unting guminhawa ang ating pamumuhay,” Eleazar concluded.
