MANILA — With the national and local elections in May next year just around the corner, former Philippine National Police (PNP) chief and senatorial aspirant Guillermo Lorenzo Tolentino Eleazar urges residents living in areas controlled by the New People’s Army (NPA) not to give in to threats and intimidation from them as giving support to these lawless groups will only prolong the problem of insurgency and terrorism in the country.

Eleazar noted that as long as there are armed groups like rebels allegedly advocating freedom and promoting their ideologies, the country will have a hard time recovering from the economic downturn resulting from the coronavirus pandemic as the violence being used by the said groups will only disrupt the peace and order that everyone so desperately wants to achieve.

To prove his point, Eleazar cited the statement of PNP chief Lieutenant General Dionardo Carlos, denouncing the latest atrocities mounted by communist terrorists against humanitarian and disaster response team missions in the Visayas and Mindanao that killed three persons and wounded several others.

Carlos echoed the condemnation from officials of the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) over the twin attacks staged by the CPP-NPA in Samar and Surigao del Sur provinces on government personnel and civilians engaged in preemptive evacuation operations ahead of the onslaught of Typhoon Odette in the eastern seaboard of the archipelago.

“These are totally deplorable actions by the local communist terrorists that deserve the strongest condemnation of civil society,” PNP Chief, Police General Dionardo B Carlos said.

For his part, Carlos’s predecessor lamented the incidents as they only resulted in hardships for those who badly needed to be evacuated and given aid by government troops.
