MANILA — Noting the valuable contributions of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) in rescue and emergency situations, especially in this time of need following the devastation wrought by super typhoon Odette (international name Rai), senatorial aspirant Guillermo Lorenzo Tolentino Eleazar vowed to include the modernization of the PCG and upgrading of its facilities and equipment in his legislative agenda if favored to be elected in the forthcoming national and local elections scheduled on May 9 next year.

Amidst the onslaught of typhoon Odette, rescue teams and first responders from the PCG immediately conducted emergency operations in disaster stricken areas, rescuing a total of 1,032 affected residents and evacuating almost 12,000 individuals in Northeastern Mindanao, Northern Mindanao, Central Visayas, Western Visayas, Eastern Visayas, and Palawan.

Eleazar also noted how the PCG had responded to the crisis situation by mobilizing teams to quickly act on 115 maritime incidents, 90 of which occurred in Central Visayas. Majority of the said maritime incidents were vessels that ran aground, became half-submerge, and reported collision. Several watercrafts were also reported as missing.

He likewise underscored the important role of the PCG in the country’s integrity and sovereignty which also encompassed among its mandate the protection and defense of Philippine territories.

“Until now, patuloy ang PCG sa kanilang efforts sa malawajang humanitarian assistance and disaster response operations sa pamanagitan ng mga relief transport operation and ferry mission,” Eleazar added.

In ending, the retired PNP chief emphasized the need to modernize the PCG by providing it with the necessary equipment and logistical aid and also to give its personnel the proper training to enhance its capabilities and be at par with its counterparts in the southeast Asian region.
