LAPULAPU CITY, Cebu – Locked in a bitter political rivalry, the camps of incumbent Mayor Junard “Ahong” Chan and mayoralty aspirant Congresswoman Paz Corro-Radaza, some P236 million calamity fund for the residents here severely affected by supertyphoon Odette has been stalled.

This only worsened the condition of the Oponganons (Opon is the old name of Lapulapu City) who have been suffering from blackout except for a few areas and lack of potable water since December 16 when supertyphoon Odette struck this highly urbanized city.

“Dapat dili nila paantoson ang mga tawo tungod lang sa ilang panagbangi sa politika (They should not let the people suffer because of their political differences),” some residents shared this common sentiment when interviewed by Maharlika TV.

Chan claimed that he has appealed to the majority of the city councilors loyal to Radaza to approve their Annual Investment Plan (AIP) for next year in order to release their P236 million calamity fund.

The calamity fund’s release aims to provide P5,000 to each family who was recently affected by Typhoon Odette.

However, Radaza’s protégé and congressional aspirant City Councilor Michael Dignos shot back that it was Chan who refused to sign the Council ordinance and caused the delay of the release of the P236 million calamity fund.

Chan wanted the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) headed by his protégé and candidate for councilor Annabeth Cuizon to distribute the calamity fund.

But the Radaza-controlled City Council preferred that the calamity fund be released thru the 30 barangay captains, the majority of whom remained loyal to the former mayor whose family ruled this city for 18 long years. (ai/mtvn)
