Prevent sickness by including these foods and vitamins in your diet

MANILA—Nowadays, taking good care of your body is not just an option nor a suggestion, but it is a crucial step to enjoy a long and healthy life. When your survival is threatened by viral or degenerative diseases or other external factors, it is time to take care of your body and be conscious of what you eat.

According to a study, micronutriens which is most commonly known as vitamins and minerals, are essential to help prevent diseases, overall development, and promote physical well-being. But micronutrients can only come from external sources such as food and vitamin supplements.

So, how do you make sure that you are including enough micronutrients in your diet to help you prevent sickness? Here are three ways to start.

Load up on citrus

Vitamin C can help prevent many common diseases while also boosting the immune system. It is a water-soluble vitamin which means that it can be carried to the body’s tissues, but cannot be stored in the body, so it has to be consumed daily.

The daily recommended amount for each life stage and lifestyle varies, but a good starting point is 90 mg for adult men and 75 mg for adult women.

Fruits and vegetables are good sources of Vitamin C. Citrus fruits such as orange, dalandan, kiwi, and calamansi, as well as tomatoes and vegetables like potatoes and broccoli are possible sources of Vitamin C that can help you reach your daily required intake.

The upper limit of daily Vitamin C intake is 2000 mg for adults. So, unless you can eat 72 pieces of calamansi in a day, you do not have to worry about consuming too much Vitamin C by eating fruits and vegetables.

The problem lies in the lack of consumption of the vitamin. Research shows that people who get less than 10 mg of Vitamin C every day for many weeks may experience scurvy or Vitamin C deficiency. It can result in fatigue, gum inflammation, poor wound healing, joint pain, and other symptoms.

That is why people need to make an extra effort to get their daily Vitamin C intake.

Take EGGstreme measures

Zinc is another essential mineral that is responsible for helping the immune system fight off bacteria and viruses that want to invade the body. It is also important for the sense of taste and smell, as well as producing proteins and DNA.

Zinc can be found in food such as oysters, crab, and lobsters, poultry including eggs, beans, nuts, whole grains, and dairy products. As with Vitamin C, different life stages also require varying daily intake. Adult men are recommended to get at least 11 mg per day, while 8 mg is the suggested amount for adult women.

To put it in context, to reach the daily recommended amount of Zinc, a person needs to eat at least six to eight fresh eggs a day.

Support your diet with supplements

Unfortunately, most people do not and cannot consume the amount of food needed to meet their daily required Vitamin C and Zinc intake. In order to do so, one option may be to support your diet with vitamin supplements.

Along with eating fruits and vegetables, getting enough exercise and sleep, drinking plenty of water, and prioritizing a healthy mental state, you may incorporate vitamin supplements into your daily routine.

However, with the increasing prices of daily necessities, some may think twice about buying the vitamins they need. Seeing this issue, pharmaceutical company RiteMED stepped in.

Since 2002, RiteMED believes that healthcare should be for everyone. As the company continues to serve Filipinos with medicines at an affordable price, it is also continuing to develop ways to help more people stay healthy.

Recently, RiteMED launched its own combination of Vitamin C plus Zinc priced at P6.00. Ascorbic Acid + Zinc (RiteMED) contains 500 mg of Ascorbic Acid, which is similar to the amount one will get from 18 pieces of calamansi, and 10 mg of Zinc, which is also the estimated number of Zinc from eight pieces of egg.

Now, anyone can get their daily recommended dose of Vitamin C and Zinc at an attainable price, helping more Filipinos get through the health crisis with strong immunity.
