MANILA — Contrary to an earlier statement by Leni Robredo’s camp, Bulacan Governor Daniel Fernando has not yet formally endorsed the candidate he will truly support for the presidency in the upcoming May 9, 2022 elections.
According to Fernando, their party will discuss who they will really support and possibly announce it before or after March 25, the first day of the campaign for the local elections.
Recently, a news apparently erroneously contained that Fernando had openly supported Robredo when he visited their province.
He even called Robredo as president when he was introduced on stage it said.
However, Fernando clarified that he calls all candidates in national or local positions based on what position they are running for.
“Sa Bulacan naman kasi … kumukha niyan, tinawag ko ang mga bokal ko na ‘bokal’ kasi iyon ang tinatakbo nila. Iyong kapitan naman namin tinatawag kong ‘konsehal’ kasi tumatakbo na siyang konsehal ngayon,” said Fernando in an interview.
When asked if it is possible that he will support the leading presidential candidate Ferdinand ‘Bongbong’ Marcos Jr., his answer was: “Malalaman natin iyan before or after March 25.”
The official said that any statement he makes regarding the candidate they will support will be consulted with their party. “Tahimik muna ako at hindi muna ako magko-komento,” he added.
Fernando is a member of the National Unity Party (NUP) where most of his colleagues and fellow governors have already openly declared their support for Marcos. Some of them are Abra Gov. Maria Jocelyn Bernos, Cavite Gov. Jonvic Remulla and Tawi-Tawi Gov.Yshmael Sali.
Fernando admitted that he is a close friend of Senator Imee Marcos because in the 80s he was also a chairman of Kabataang Barangay (KB).
“Kami iyong pangalawang batch ng KB at kaibigan ko talaga si Senadora Imee,” said the former actor who is now a politician.
Fernando is now running again as governor of Bulacan and his opponent is Vice-Governor Willy Sy-Alvardo who has previously expressed support for Marcos. (ai/mtvn)
