CEBU CITY, CEBU — Following the spate of price hikes on fuel prices, PROMDI presidential aspirant Senator Manny Pacquiao underscored the need for the government to review its minimum wage policy in order to help lessen the impact of the coronavirus pandemic as well as the soaring prices of basic commodities.

In a statement, the incumbent senator highlighted the urgent need to increase the salaries of workers, noting that it has already been years since the country’s labor force has urged the national government to increase their daily minimum wage.

Sinubukan kong mamalengke gamit iyong budget ng isang ordinaryong pamilya sa isang buwan, hindi kasya for one month,” the People’s Champ pointed out.

The government should also come up with measures that will prevent the huge increases in the price of basic commodities,” he added to also give weight to his proposal of standardizing wages wages across the country.

Prior to Pacquiao’s call for increased wages, labor secretary Silvestre Bello III had admitted that the ₱537 minimum wage being implemented is not sufficient even as he raised concern whether businesses could really afford to increase the salaries of their employees.

With the Covid-19 pandemic affecting most businesses, the resulting economic downturn triggered by lockdowns and restrictions has given reasons to many companies why it has been difficult for them to increase the salaries of their workforce.

Aside from higher salaries, the PROMDI standard-bearer likewise vowed to push for additional benefits for workers, including those for healthcare and the education of their children.(ai/mtvn)
