Catholic church mum on blasphemous ‘Hail Leni full of grace…’ tarpaulin

MANILA — The Vatican went wild some decades back just about the use of the name (Madonna) as it reflects Mama Mary holding Baby Jesus and all the more when adventurous and bold singer-songwriter Madonna flouted an inverted crucifix for her necklace during a sellout concert and subsequent pictorials.

But here, the Catholic church, for all its graces and pro-Leni stand, will not even lift a finger and denounce a blatant disregard, disrespect, and an outrightly blasphemous usage and parody of the favorite prayer of many, the “Hail Mary.”

How could the Catholic Church afford to be eerily silent on this sacrilegious act?

Could it be that the Church is too willing to bend too far backward and condone whatever it takes to have her elected?

Here’s MTVN’s check on this…

FACT CHECK: “Hail Leni full of grace my vote is with you.” Is it blasphemous to reappropriate a Biblical quote for a political candidate, even replacing the name of someone deemed sacred as Mother Mary with the name of a politician?

Recently, the photo spread on social media showing a supporter of Leni Robredo holding a tarpaulin with the words “Hail Leni full of grace my vote is with you” and it was quickly lambasted with various reactions on social media.

Isn’t that blasphemy in the eyes of Catholics?

Rating: Profanity! Contemptible against Catholicism!

In the perspective of the Catholic Church, putting the name of a presidential candidate in place of the name of Mother Mary constitutes blasphemy.

Mother Mary, also known as Virgin Mary, is supposedly a divine figure in Catholicism, selected by God to conceive man and give birth to the Lord Jesus Christ.

The photo that went viral on social media of a Leni Robredo supporter carrying a tarpaulin with the words, “Hail Leni full of grace, my vote is with you,” was authenticated in a post on Facebook by one Antonio P. Contreras.

According to his post, the first thing he believed when he saw the photo was that it was fake, so he reported it to Facebook. However, when he saw another angle taken of the subject, he realized that it was true and not fake, and he apologized for reporting it incorrectly.

This is the complete text of his post.

“ERRATUM

“In the end, it was actually real.

“When I opined that this tarpaulin proclaiming the divinity of one candidate, I only saw one image. And based on that, I made a conclusion that it is fake.

“Looking at the second image now, it is clear that indeed, a tarp bearing the words “Hail Leni, full of grace, my vote is with you” existed.

“While I remind people about sticking to facts, the other thing I also now remind everyone is to be ready to admit a mistake when proven wrong.

“My apologies. I was wrong.

“One of Leni Robredo’s supporters may be seen carrying a tarpaulin with the words “Hail Leni full of grace, my vote is with you” in numerous photographs, which has been contested by other netizens who claim it is fake and edited.

“However, another photograph emerged, which appears to have been shot from a distance and in which the person carrying the tarpaulin can still be seen, as well as the fact that it is still written in the same manner.”
