Will Smith resigns from the Academy after slapping incident at the Oscars

Actor Will Smith voluntarily resigned from his post as member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the film academy that handles the Oscars awards.

Will admitted that this is the result of his act that destroyed the occasion while the talents of actors are being recognized for creating quality films in Hollywood.

In his official statement, Will  reiterated his apologies to the people whom he has hurt during the occasion.

“I am resigning from membership in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and will accept any further consequences the Board deems appropriate.

“My actions at the 94th Academy Awards presentation were shocking, painful, and inexcusable.

“The list of those I have hurt is long and includes Chris, his family, many of my dear friends and loved ones, all those in attendance, and global audiences at home.

“I betrayed the trust of the Academy. I deprived other nominees and winners of their opportunity to celebrate and be celebrated for their extraordinary work.

“I am heartbroken,”  Will humbly stated.

He added,  “I want to put the focus back on those who deserve attention for their achievements and allow the Academy to get back to the incredible work it does to support creativity and artistry in film.”

Will was named Best Actor during the 94th Academy Awards held on March 27, 2022 at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles.

Will has a distinct performance in “King Richard”, a biopic about the father of tennis players Venus and Serena Williams.

But it could not be claimed as a complete victory because it was tainted with controversy instead, when Will got offended by Chris Rock’s jokes.

Will slapped Chris on his face in the middle of the award ceremonies just because of Chris’ ad lib on Jana Pinkett Smith’s condition.

Many were caught by surprise, but Will was accorded a standing ovation when he was proclaimed Best Actor.

Will emotionally justified during his acceptance speech that his gesture was in the name  of “love” for his wife. But even before the event was over, Will was bashed by his fellow actors because of his “sorry-not-sorry” statement.

Although some people said that Chris was wrong in making fun of  Jada’s health condition, it is still not right for Will to hurt Chris physically amid the glorious event that evening. (ECD/MTVN)
