JPE downplays the estate tax issue vs BBM, says it’s nothing but pure politics

MANILA — Former Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile on Tuesday dismissed as politically motivated the estate tax issue being hurled against presidential frontrunner Ferdinand ‘Bongbong’ Marcos and his family by their detractors.

This developed as he also declared that he was willing to offer his services for free as the family’s lawyer to prove that critics led by lawyer Antonio Carpio and also-ran presidential bets Isko Domagoso, Manny Pacquiao, and Leni Robredo, “were all ignorant of taxation laws and do not know what they were talking about”.

“Walang issue.

Wala pa akong natalong kaso,” he added.

Enrile, 98, is a well-known tax expert and graduated with a Master of Law degree from Harvard School of Law with a specialization in international tax law.

I will present. I will tell Bongbong, ibigay mo na lang sa akin, ako na lang maghahawak nyan. Gratis et amore,” JPE said in an interview with Bombo Radyo.

Enrile explained the alleged P203-B in estate tax by Ferdinand E. Marcos Sr. is big nonsense because, first of all, both the national government and the Bureau of Internal Revenue, are yet to come up with final, accurate and comprehensive assessments of the Marcos estate’s assets.

“Kalokohan yan….Nasaan yung desisyon?

He added that if there is an estate tax to be paid, the government should not compel BBM and other members of Marcos’s family to settle them, but should instead ask Marcos’s estate to pay for them.

Because of this, Enrile reiterated that the issue of the estate tax is only forcibly being heaped on BBM for purely political reasons.

‘Woohh Bongbong, BBM!’ paano mo tatalunin nyan? Kulelat kayo dito sa Ilocandia, kulelat kayo,” said Enrile.

Enrile also laughed at those who accuse Marcos because apart from politics, many of his opponents also do not understand the ramifications of the estate tax. (ai/mtvn)
