LAS Pinas City — President Rodrigo Duterte on Friday led government officials in the groundbreaking ceremony of the soon-to-rise Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW) Center in Las Pinas City.
The center will serve as a one-stop-shop catering to the needs of overseas Filipinos. The 10-story building is to be known as the Versailles Palace and will be constructed along Daang Hari in Las Piñas City.
President Duterte stated that the welfare of migrant Filipinos must be prioritized.
“I fully support projects and other activities that promote the welfare and the holistic development of our unsung heroes who will always play a crucial part in our country’s development, especially during times of recovery after the tumultuous events such as the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.”
He added that about 11 percent of the country’s population of around 10 million Filipinos work and stay in over 100 countries.
According to the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, OFW remittances hit record-breaking $34B in 2021. The remittance of migrant workers is around 9 percent of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP).
