MMDA NEW NUMBER CODING SCHEME SEEN TO REDUCE P40% TRAFFIC IN NCR

By Glen S. Ramos

MANILA — Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) chairman Romando Artes said the agency is looking at implementing a new number coding scheme that will at least reduce 40% of the number of vehicles passing major roads of Metro Manila.

Artes added that under the new coding system, private vehicles will be prohibited from traversing the affected roads for two days, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Plate numbers ending 1 and 2 will be on Monday and Wednesday; those ending in 3 and 4 on Monday and Thursday; 5 and 6 every Tuesday and Thursday; 7 and 8 Tuesday and Friday; and 9 and 0 every Wednesday and Friday.

Public utility vehicles (PUV) such as buses, jeepneys, taxis, and ride-hailing services are excluded from the scheme.

If implemented, it will help minimize traffic in EDSA northbound from 0.62 (moderate flow) to 0.52 (light to moderate flow) and in EDSA southbound from 0.71 (moderate to heavy traffic) to 0.59 (moderate flow). (ai/mtvn)
