LAPU-LAPU CITY, Cebu — Several residents here on Sunday lauded the decision of at least four presidential contenders to pursue their respective bids despite the insult and underhanded tactics of the camp of fellow candidate Vice President Leni Robredo who asked them to withdraw and support her candidacy instead.

In what could be a telling counterstrike, Robredowas also dared to withdraw “if she truly loves her country.”

Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso, Sen. Ping Lacson, and former Defense Secretary Norberto Gonzales on Sunday, April 17, held a joint press conference to announce that together with Senator Manny Pacquiao they are determined to finish the presidential race.

“If the yellow-pink are calling for the supreme sacrifice, the same challenge they are giving us — now we are calling [on them]. Be a hero, withdraw, Leni,” Moreno dared Robredo.

The self-proclaimed opposition leader had earlier admitted that she only ran for president to prevent former Senator Bongbong Marcos from being elected president.

Marcos is leading in all reputable surveys even as he appears headed to a landslide win based on the recent exit polls from among the overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), who for the first time in history showed utmost enthusiasm in executing their right to suffrage.

Moreno said Pacquiao has signified his intention to sign the joint statement according to Moreno.

However, the retired world boxing champion was still on the way to Manila from General Santos City at the time of the press conference.

Lacson directly named Robredo as the alleged person behind the attempts to force other presidential candidates to withdraw from the race.

“Pare-pareho ang experience namin. Kaming dalawa ni Mayor Isko, actually, bukod pa doon sa kinakausap, gusto pa kaming hubaran. They were trying to strip us of our supporters, ‘yung mga support group,” Lacson fumed.

Retired Comelec Commissioner Rowena Guanzon also reportedly appealed to Gonzales to withdraw his candidacy.

“Even if we all withdraw, our votes will not automatically shift to VP Robredo. So hindi valid na argument na lilipat sa kanila if we withdraw,” Gonzales said.
