LAPU-LAPU CITY, Cebu — Determined in his bid to accelerate economic development by having more investors, jobs, and livelihood opportunities, congressional candidate Junex Doronio on Wednesday reiterated his commitment that — if elected — he will push for the creation of the Province of Lapu-Lapu that will be composed of this highly urbanized city, the island of Olango and will annex the municipality of Cordova.
“Cordova should be included in our envisioned Province of Lapu-Lapu because it is also situated on Mactan island. We can also create two legislative districts,” Doronio said.
The veteran journalist and Team Abtik founder made the statement on the 501st anniversary of the historic Battle of Mactan when Datu Lapu-Lapu, believed to be a Muslim of the Tausog tribe, led his band of warriors in defeating the well-armed Spanish colonizers led by Portuguese navigator Ferdinand Magellan.
Doronio explained that it is only fitting that the new province should be named after Datu Lapu-Lapu who is undoubtedly the country’s first hero and the first Asian warrior-leader who quelled foreign invasion.
Doronio praised President Rodrigo Duterte for signing Republic Act 11040 declaring April 27 as “a special working public holiday” throughout the country in honor of Cebuano hero Lapu-Lapu.
“We believe that Lapu-Lapu should be elevated as among our national heroes. Maybe, someday we’d like to see Lapu-Lapu’s image in our 500-peso bill,” he said.
Doronio also pointed out that under the Local Government Code, a new province must have a population of at least 250,000, an annual income of P20 million, and a land area of 2,000 square kilometers.
He noted that population-wise, the establishment of the Province of Lapu-Lapu is feasible because, in the 2022 census, Lapu-Lapu City has a population of 495,666 people while in 2020 Cordova has 70,595 people in its still not updated 2020 census or a total of at least 566,261 residents.
Doronio further said that in 2020 alone, the income of Lapu-Lapu City was obviously more than P20 million as its revenue already reached ₱2,687,149,804.74.
