LAPU-LAPU CITY, Cebu — Saying that they believe in his sincerity, capability, and decisiveness, officers and members of the popular Zumba group Sexy Gurra on Tuesday expressed their strong support for the congressional candidacy of veteran journalist Junex Doronio for the lone district of this highly urbanized city.

“We believe in the sincerity, capability, and decisiveness of Junex Doronio to craft bills that will address today’s pressing concerns not only in our city but throughout the country like unemployment, low wages, the dismal state of education, lack of quality socialized housing, injustice, among others,” Sexy Gurra president Lorna Ymbong said.

The Sexy Gurra Zumba group performs on New Coastal Road, Babag 2 in Barangay Babag.

“Particularly, we believe in his commitment to extending aid and benefits to the youth, senior citizens, PWDs, single parents, women, LGBTQI+, urban poor, and Muslim communities,” Ymbong added.

The Sexy Gurra promised to vigorously campaign for Doronio.

Earlier, a large urban poor group and a Muslim association declared their support for Doronio.

Upper Kagudoy (Basak) Darul Iman Urban Poor Association (UKDAIUPA) president Abdul Gafur “Allan” Namli and Lapu-Lapu City Islamic Propagation Center (LCIPC) chairman Abdurahim “Pastor” Lopez promised to help Doronio win as representative, saying that the 64-year-old journo is “the only one who can be easily approached with and quick to respond to the people’s grievances.”

The LCIPC led by Lopez, a former born-again Christian pastor-turned-Balik Islam (Muslim revert) who is now an Imam (prayer leader of a mosque), expressed appreciation that Doronio has vowed to help them build a cemetery once he is elected as a congressman.

Doronio — like action star Robin Padilla and award-winning musician Freddie Aguilar — is also a Balik Islam. (ai/mtvn)
