MANILA — Saying that she was still “in a process of discernment and consultations,” former Labor Undersecretary Susan “Toots” Ople has expressed deep gratitude that president-elect Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. offered her the post of secretary of the newly-created Department of Migrant Workers.

No doubt that serving the workers is in her blood as a daughter of the late Senate President Blas Ople who also served as secretary of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) during the term of the late President Ferdinand E. Marcos Sr.

“We met last Friday, and it was a warm, and inspiring meeting. He (Marcos) spoke about the need to get the new department up and running, and for it to care for our OFWs and also develop programs for their families, especially the children of migrant workers,” the younger Ople said in a statement.

Apparently honoring her father, Toots Ople founded the non-profit organization Blas Ople Policy Center.

Registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and accredited with the Commission on Human Rights (CHR) and the Inter-Agency Council Against Trafficking (IACAT), the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), the Commission on Filipinos Overseas (COF), and other IACAT-member agencies are active partners of the Ople Center in its advocacies for migrant workers’ rights and welfare.

The elder Ople held the Cabinet post for 17 years and was later elected senator who also rose to become Senate President. He was also appointed Foreign Affairs secretary.

“Given his kind offer for me to return to public service, I am now in a process of discernment and consultations – because I am aware of the enormity of the task and the challenges involved,” Toots admitted. (ai/mtvn)
