Business group lauds BBM’s ‘choice’ in his economic team

MANILA — Local business groups welcomed the economic team that is expected to respond to the country’s economic problems and concerns under the incoming administration of president-in-waiting Ferdinand ‘Bongbong’ Marcos Jr.

Earning praises from business groups, the namesake of the late president Ferdinand Edralin Marcos Sr. announced new appointments to his economic team, emphasizing that his leadership will focus mainly on steering the country’s economy out of the quagmire of despair brought about by the coronavirus pandemic and fluctuating prices of petroleum products around the world.

Just a day after he and vice president-elect ‘Inday’ Sara Duterte-Carpio were proclaimed winners by Congress in the May 9 polls, Marcos had announced the nomination of Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) governor Benjamin Diokno as his finance secretary and President Joseph ‘Erap’ Estrada’s former National Economic Development Authority (Neda) chief Felipe Medalla as BSP governor.

In an interview, Marcos Jr. stressed that the first priority of his administration would be the economy.

“That’s why we have been very, very careful in choosing the economic team. I know the economic team is critical and that is what people are looking (forward) to. I think we have found the best people for it who are able to look forward and to anticipate what the conditions will be for the Philippines (and) the rest of the world in the coming years,” he said.

In ending, the former senator also highlighted that “there should not be any place for corruption.”

He explained that the economy would “simply not succeed if we cannot collect duties, tariffs, etc. . . . So that’s why it is very, very important and we have to, at the very least, reduce the corrosive influence of corruption in government, as a general rule.” (ai/mtvn)
